Large numerical simulations of turbulent rotating flows

چکیده
Scientific context Rotation, as measured by the Rossby number (the ratio of the rotation period to the eddy turn over time) is present in astroand geophysics. For example, the high Reynolds number large scales of atmospheric and oceanic flows are affected by the rotation of the Earth; the Rossby number Ro = U0/[L0Ω] for mid-latitude atmospheric synoptic scales is Ro ≈ 0.1 whereas in the solar convective zone, Ro ≈ 0.1-1 (with U0, L0 characteristic velocity and scale, and Ω the rotation rate). For rapid rotation, significant progress has been made in the past by developing resonant wave theory, two-point spectral closures, and weak turbulence: at low Ro, the flow is considered as a superposition of inertial waves with a short period, and the evolution of the system for long times is derived considering the effect of resonant triad interactions. However, at high Reynolds number Re, small scales are excited with a characteristic timescale proportional to the eddy turnover time, that decreases as the scales become smaller. Therefore the approximations made in such theories (small Ro) can break down at sufficiently small scales. We thus resorted to long-time high-resolution direct numerical simulations (DNS) to explore rotating flows at high Reynolds number in the presence of helical forcing and down to Ro ≈ 0.03. The corresponding non-helical case with a Taylor-Green forcing instead of an ABC Beltrami forcing is reported in (1).

The behavior of the flow between two coaxial conical cylinders with the inner one rotating and the outer one stationary is studied numerically. The angular velocity of the inner cone cylinder was raised step by step from the rest until reaching its final speed. In this work we first present a numerical simulation of the flow characteristics and the heat transfer mechanism of a fluid in the spac...
متن کاملOverview of Direct Numerical Simulation of Particle Entrainment in Turbulent Flows
An overview of removal and re-entrainment of particles in turbulent flows is presented. The procedure for the direct numerical simulation (DNS) of the Navier-Stokes equation via a pseudospectral method for simulating the instantaneous fluid velocity field is described. Particle removal mechanisms in turbulent flows in a duct are examined and effects of the near-wall coherent eddies on the parti...
متن کاملReynolds stress budgets in Couette and boundary layer flows
Reynolds stress budgets for both Couette and boundary layer flows are evaluated and presented. Data are taken from direct numerical simulations of rotating and non-rotating plane turbulent Couette flow and turbulent boundary layer with and without adverse pressure gradient. Comparison of the total shear stress for the two flows suggests that the Couette case may be regarded as the high Reynolds...
متن کاملLarge-eddy simulation of turbulent flow over an array of wall-mounted cubes submerged in an emulated atmospheric boundary-layer
Turbulent flow over an array of wall-mounted cubic obstacles has been numerically investigated using large-eddy simulation. The simulations have been performed using high-performance computations with local cluster systems. The array of cubes are fully submerged in a simulated deep rough-wall atmospheric boundary-layer with high turbulence intensity characteristics of environmental turbulent fl...
